A Renaissance house under the arcades
Cat Mitty Hotel sits on Smetanovo náměstí, the long market square of Litomyšl, in a three-storey Renaissance townhouse: an arched stone portal at street level, a cream and rose front with white stucco window frames above it, and a steep roof with dormers. The square has arcades down both sides and a cafe in most of them, and the chateau with its sgraffito walls is a five-minute climb away.
The house has nineteen rooms, a stair wide enough to carry luggage up two at a time and a light hall where the armchairs by the window are rarely free of a cat.
Three floors and a roof
Ground floor
The front desk, the light hall, the restaurant and the small bar behind the stair.
First floor
The formal level of the old house: tall windows, a gallery over the courtyard and the largest rooms of the building.
Second floor
Bedrooms facing the square and the stucco suite, with narrow balconies over the market stalls.
Under the roof
Twin rooms with timber beams, round windows and tiled stoves.
The hall and the bar
Guests come in through a stone portal into a light hall with tall windows, a wooden front desk, two armchairs under a chandelier and a rack of postcards of the cats we have met. The small bar behind the stair has oak shelves lit from below and a row of coral velvet stools. It opens in the evening, pours East Bohemian beer and Moravian wine and closes when the last conversation does.
A house this old has quirks. There is no lift, the stair creaks on the fourth step and the water takes a minute to warm up. We would rather tell you now and let you pick a room on a lower floor, which is a request the desk handles daily.
