The Aegean coast of Turkey is built for people who like to sit. Stone houses open straight onto harbours, olive presses stand in the middle of town, and the cafes put their chairs wherever the sea breeze is best. We plan five days around that habit and add as little as possible.
Each morning has one outing and each afternoon has one long lunch. In between there is time to find your own cat, since every harbour in this region seems to keep a few, all well fed and all unimpressed.
The ribbon of days
1
Landing in Izmir
We fly into Izmir, drive west along the coast and arrive in Alacati for a late lunch under a vine. The first evening is for walking the lanes, which are lined with white shutters and bougainvillea.
2
Windmills and wine cellars
A short drive takes us to the windmills above Alacati, then to a family winery where the owner pours a few small glasses and talks about her grandfather’s vines. Lunch is simple and long.
3
Foca by boat
In Foca we take a small boat along a rocky coast, swim off the stern for anyone who wants to, and eat grilled fish at a table that nearly touches the water. The harbour cats arrive before the fish.
4
Ayvalik and its olive streets
Ayvalik is a town of old Greek houses and olive soap. We visit a press, taste oil the way other people taste wine and spend the afternoon in a bookshop cafe with a very tolerant tabby.
5
Cunda and the road home
A morning ferry to Cunda Island for breakfast by the sea, a last walk around the old quarter and then the road back to Izmir for the evening flight to Prague.
