Chefchaouen is painted in every blue the paint shop sells, and the cats of the medina have decided to match it, because they sit on the blue steps and look very dignified. We stay four nights in a riad at the top of the old town and take the mountains in small bites.
Two of the days include a walk, never longer than four hours, and the rest is for the medina itself. The pace is slow enough to read a book on a roof terrace between breakfast and lunch.

Tangier to the mountains
A flight to Tangier and a minibus through hills of cork oak and wild olive, with a tea stop at a roadside cafe. We reach Chefchaouen by late afternoon and climb to the riad on foot while porters carry the bags.

A day with no plan
The medina is small enough to get lost in and lose the habit. The guide gives a first walk, then lets the group scatter to the dyers’ lanes, the bread ovens and the wall where the ginger cat sleeps.

Akchour waterfalls
We drive to Akchour and walk beside a green river to the waterfalls, with a pause at a stall that sells grilled corn and strong coffee. The path is wide and well worn; swimming is for the brave.

A village in the Rif
A day trip to a Rif village for a home-cooked lunch, a visit to the goat cheese maker and a walk through terraces of almonds. Sunset is back on the riad roof.

Tetouan and the flight home
A last morning in Chefchaouen, a drive to Tetouan for the white medina and the airport transfer, and an evening flight to Prague.
