Naxos is the biggest of the Cyclades and the greenest, with a mountain in the middle and villages of marble houses on every slope. We walk between them on old stone paths, never for more than three hours at a time, and eat lunch wherever the path decides.
Evenings are in the old town of Chora, in a small hotel near the harbour. The cats of Chora are the most organised in this book: they have shifts, and the night shift knows our guide by name.
The ribbon of days

Arrival in Chora
A flight to Athens, a ferry across the Aegean and a first walk up through the old town to the castle gate. Dinner is a table of small plates at the edge of the harbour.

Halki and the olive press
A short drive to Halki, a village of old merchant houses, followed by a stroll between olive groves and a tasting at a family distillery of the local citron liqueur.

Filoti and the old path
We start in Filoti, below the highest peak on the island, and follow a path of worn stones to a chapel with a view. The cats of the chapel get half the sandwiches.

Apiranthos in marble
Apiranthos is built of marble and looks like it was polished at dawn. We stroll its lanes, visit a small museum and eat in a courtyard where the owner’s mother runs the grill.

The temple and the coast
A morning at the unfinished marble gate on the harbour and the temple of Demeter in the green fields at Sangri, then a free afternoon at a beach of your choosing.

Apollonas and farewell
A last drive to the northern coast to see the unfinished giant statue in its quarry, a farewell lunch by the sea and the ferry back to Athens for the flight home.
