South-eastern Sicily is the part of the island where the stone turns the colour of honey toast. Ortigia is a small town on its own island, Noto is a baroque film set with real cafes, and the cats of both prefer to lie on the warm stone steps outside a bakery.

We sleep five nights in a family hotel in Ortigia and take day trips by minibus, never for more than an hour. In between there are granita breakfasts, a market that has not changed in sixty years and plenty of afternoons for reading in a shaded square.

The ribbon of days

1

Ortigia, first lap

We land in Catania, drive south and reach Ortigia in time for a long, slow aperitivo. The guide walks us once around the island, which takes forty minutes and an hour more if there is gelato.

2

The market and the sea wall

A morning at the Ortigia market with the fishmongers and cheese sellers, a lunch of whatever is freshest, and an afternoon on the sea wall with a lemon granita and a book.

3

Syracuse and the old quarry

A short ride to Syracuse for the Greek theatre and the old quarries, then back to Ortigia for dinner. The cats of the Archaeological Park have a very good view and know it.

4

Noto, the golden town

A day in Noto among baroque churches and balconies held up by stone figures. We have lunch in a courtyard with an almond tree and stay on for the evening, when the stone turns pink.

5

Modica and Ragusa Ibla

A drive through carob groves to Modica, where the chocolate is made with sugar that does not melt, and then on to Ragusa Ibla for a walk through its steep stairs.

6

Marzamemi and farewell

A last morning at the fishing village of Marzamemi, a farewell lunch by the harbour and the drive to Catania for the evening flight home.
