Morocco asks for a gentler pace than the guidebooks admit, and we set ours by the shade. Two tours head there: the blue lanes of Chefchaouen and the long, deep medina of Fez.
In both places the old towns are best explored on foot, early, before the sun turns the stone to a griddle. The guides are local, the riads are small, and the cats are always at home.
How the year reads
Spring
March to May is warm, bright and full of wildflowers in the hills. This is the season we like best.
Summer
June to August is too hot for long medina walks, so we rest.
Autumn
October and November are mild, with clear light and calmer streets.
Winter
December to February can be cold and wet in the mountains. Chefchaouen goes quiet and the riad fires are lit.
A small map
In the medinas the cats live in the lanes between houses and treat every doorstep as a stall. They take scraps from the butcher and give nothing back, except presence.
