Sicily is the island where we can stay a week and still find a lane we missed. Our two tours cover the golden south-east and the green slopes beneath Etna, with plenty of time for granita.
Both tours use the same rule of thumb: one town a day, one long lunch, and one hour of doing nothing in a square. It works in baroque Noto and it works beside a volcano.
How the year reads
Spring
April to June has green hills, warm days and very few crowds. Etna still has snow on top.
Summer
July and August are heavy with heat. We stay away.
Autumn
September and October are the harvest season, when grapes and almonds come in and the sea is still warm.
Winter
Wet and windy from November to March, but oranges ripen and the streets are empty. We do not travel then.
A small map
Sicilian cats keep to sunlit steps and the doorways of bakeries. In Ortigia a few of them have learnt that tourists at breakfast mean ricotta, and they position themselves accordingly.
