A Cat Mitty destination

Turkey

Istanbul by ferry and the olive harbours of the Aegean coast: where Cat Mitty goes in Turkey, and when the weather is kind.

Eroded tuff rock pinnacles above a wide green valley of fields and low hills

Turkey is the country where our guides stopped counting cats and started thanking them. Two tours go there: one over the roofs and ferries of Istanbul, one along the olive-scented Aegean coast.

The two Turkish tours share a habit: they keep every morning short and every lunch long. Istanbul rewards a steady walker, the Aegean rewards a good sitter, and both reward anyone who says yes to a second tea.

How the year reads

Spring

April to June is the sweet spot. Istanbul is green, the ferries are not yet packed and the Aegean sea is cold enough to be bracing.

Summer

July and August are hot on the coast and crowded in town. We do not run tours in these months.

Autumn

September and October are warm and golden. The sea holds its heat, the light is soft and the tea tastes better.

Winter

November to March brings rain and wind to the Bosphorus. Istanbul is moody and beautiful, but we stay home.

The cats of Istanbul are protected by a quiet agreement among shopkeepers, and the sign of it is a bowl outside nearly every shop. Our guide knows which door belongs to which cat. The stone chimneys of Cappadocia, in the photograph, are on our wish list rather than on a tour, which the cats there do not seem to mind.

Tours that go there

Prices on the cards are guide prices per person in Czech crowns. The manager confirms the final figure when you send a request.
