A Cat Mitty destination

The Cyclades

Marble villages on Naxos and harbour days around Paros: where Cat Mitty goes in the Cyclades, and the months that suit it.

Whitewashed village on a dry hillside above a deep blue bay

The Cyclades are a ring of islands in the middle of the Aegean, each with its own colour of light. We keep to two of them, Naxos and Paros, because they still have villages that do not depend on visitors.

Walking, swimming and eating make up most of the tours here. The paths are old, the ferries are slow and the harbours make decent company at the end of the day.

How the year reads

Spring

May and June bring wildflowers, warm sea and soft light. Most tavernas are open and the beaches are quiet.

Summer

July and August are crowded and hot, with strong winds on the water. We rest.

Autumn

September and October are our favourite months: the sea is warm, the light is low and the harvest is in.

Winter

Many places close from November to March and the ferries slow down, so we stay home.

Every Cycladic harbour keeps a few cats, fed by the fishermen and kept in order by an old tom who rarely leaves the shade. Paros has the most polite ones, Naxos the most punctual.
